After Vesa Toskala had a couple of bad starts in the first two games of the season, Maple Leaf fans were screaming for his head. Most fans that you talk to say that the Monster, Jonas Gustavsson, should be the No. 1 starter and Vesa should be backing him up unlike what they have now.
However, if you look at the first three games of the season, it's not fair to lay all the blame on Toskala or really any other goaltender that plays in Toronto. The entire team has been horrible. Even head coach Ron Wilson got on his team publicly about defensive issues and the lack of offense. It's just that it's easy to blame something on the goalie because he's the one standing in front of the net.
Remember last season, when they brought Justin Pogge up from the minors, and he was supposed to be the next great thing in goal for them? And then he didn't do so well, the fans turned on him as well? I won't be surprised if Gustavsson starts feeling the heat from the fans after a couple of games that don't go his way.
So are there really goaltending problems in Toronto? I would say they aren't as bad as people think they are. Once the players in front of the goalie get their game straightened out, it should all come together. Phil Kessel will be a great offensive boost for the team when he returns in mid-November, depending on who plays with him. He doesn't exactly have the same calibre of setup guys that he had in Boston.
